Amazing Spider-Man 634

Posted by bps 17 June 2010

This is it. The Grim hunt is finally here. The Kravens have been planning this day ever since Kraven died at his own hand while fighting Spider-Man. All Spidey enemies eventually die at their own hand. The Kravens have been hunting all the Spiders including, Madame Web, and Mattie Franklin, a retired Spider-Woman, kind of.

The story
It all starts a few months ago, when Sasha Kraven called for a meeting at Vladmir's grave, with Alyosha Kraven to discuss their greatest hunt yet. For those who do not know, Aloysha, is Kraven's mutant son and Vladmir is his real son.

The story then zooms forward to current time. It starts in a zoo, for I'm not entirely sure what reason. Here, Madame Web thinks to herself, how people always ask her if she know when she is going to die ( she can see the future). Her answer is always yes. The bottom line is that she is not afraid, nor ashamed of death. Instead she is ashamed of days like this, in which she has failed all her friends.

The scene shifts to Peter, who is having a sick morning in bed. He concludes that this hectic season of fighting old bad guys have caught up with him. His rest is interfered by a knock on the door, who turns out to be a very bloodied Kaine. While attending to his clone-brother, Peter hears some explosions outside. It appears to be Julia Carpenter, another Spider-Woman who goes by the name Arachne, running away from somewhere.

Spidey comes to rescue her, only to find himself tangled in a much bigger situation. After trying to take on Aloysha and Ana Kraven, the two decide that it is best to run away. While chatting with one another, trying to understand what this is all about, the Kravens catch up with Spidey and Arachne. Despite a few good scenes of Spider-Man beating the Kravens about, he essentially blacks out.

The scene jumps back to Kaine, who has awoken in the bathroom. He's obviously in some kind of depression, thinking that he does not deserve to live as a clone of someone else. As he thinks back, he remembers how Ana Kraven told him that she'd let him live since his whole life is pretty much a mockery to Spider-Man. I'm under the impression that for a moment here, Kaine actually considered leaving Peter to die, becoming the only Peter left.

Spider-Man later wakes up in Mattie Franklin's apartment, the other Spider-woman, which is a terrible mess that smells of blood. Apparently, Arachne was able to get them out safely. As the two further discuss what is going on, a terrible looking man, covered in Spiders appear. This guys is in such bad shape that no reader would recognize him. Fortunately, Spidey identifies him as Ezekiel - the spiritual Spider guy who kept appearing during the JMS run. At least thats how I remember him.

Anyway, the scene jumps to Madame Web, who is with Mattie in captivity. Mattie is scared as she knows she is going to die. To make it worst, Madame Web does not assure her safety. This has to be the saddest scene as Mattie worries that no one will save her, and that no one will care that she dies.

She is killed, in the presence of Electro and some other creeps, in order to resurrect Vladmir. Vladmir resurrects from the dead, but does not quite come out as expected. Sasha concludes that if Kraven is to be ressurected, it has to be Spider-Man who dies, not any other spider.

The second story :The untold tale of Kraven the Hunter part 1

This story starts with Kraven hunting some thug he was paid to kill. He does not kill his prey however as he does not want to be a Hunter who hunts unworthy prey for money. He is next seen returning his pay, stating that he is not interested in killing the target. After some arguments and fights, everyone around him is dead, except for the boss of course. All the while, Kraven thinks to himself how he hates cities, yet somehow keeps returning to them.

Kraven leaves the scene and is next seen in bed with two women. He thinks of his perfect childhood, and why they moved to America. He ponders what he is doing in America. Looking at a picture of his family, he realizes how cheap he has become - killing for money, sleeping with women. He is tired of hunting with no pleasure. He then chases the women out his home. The next day, he stands at a balcony, comparing himself to an ant in the city. Just then a Spider lands on his hand. The art suggests that Kraven wanted to squash it. Instead he lets it live. The final scene is of Kaine, being hired by someone to take care of Kraven.

So far, this story seems to be pretty good. Any Kaine appearance makes the whole story different. It is implied that Kaine is no longer going to be the bad guy in the picture. He'll probably risk his life and try to save Peter. As mentioned earlier, the impression I got when Kaine dropped the razor was that he decided he was not going to be a fake spider that did not matter to the Kravens. He was also not going to start a new life, knowing that his 'brother' was going to die.

I absolutely did not agree with Mattie dying in this issue. Of all the ways to die, this was pretty sad. Some kind of mutant Vladmir appeared out of the ground when Mattie died. I really have no comments on what might become of him. Ezekiel's appearance is definitely not appreciated, however it could make things interesting. Overall a good first story.

The second story was not too bad either. Kraven seems to be pretty regretful of his life here. I definitely did not expect to see Kaine there. Nonetheless, as mentioned, any story with Kaine in it is pretty good.
