Astonishing Spider-Man and Wolverine # 4

Posted by bps 06 April 2011

So here is part four of the six part story featuring Spider-Man and Wolverine. This has to be my favorite of all the issues in this story so far.

The Story

It opens with Wolverine getting his ass kicked in the ring by the weird Spider-Man. He thinks to himself how someone is really going to pay for doing this to him. Spider-Man in the meantime finds himself covered in meat, running away from Logan and his wolves.

In a completely different timeline, a bunch of English Crusaders bump into Czar and his midget friend ( we can now finally see their faces and tell that the sidekick is a midget.) These guys pick a fight with the Crusaders and send them flying through time - just for fun. Once they are done, they decide to go home - somewhere towards the end of the world.

Back home, Czar sees himself there having all the fun. Clearly, he's been doing this time travel for a while now.

The scene jumps back to Wolverine, who is done with the fight. He doesn't say a word, but concludes that the only person more annoying that Spider-Man is a teenage Spider-Man. Obviously, Wolverine has been transported back in time and is one of the boxers that Peter fought with for extra cash before becoming Spider-Man. For a moment he is thankful that at least he is in a fairly familiar time zone - one where he can easily contact the Fantastic four or something.

In probably my favorite scene of the issue, Wolverine walks past the bank where all the time travel started. He tells Peter to get lost, saying he is going to rob the bank. Peter simply allows him to do so, surprising Wolverine. Just then, Wolverine's eyes catch fire and he suddenly sees everything about Peter's past that made him Spider-Man. Saddened, Wolverine tells Peter good luck with life and proceeds to rob the bank. Wolverine goes into the bank, looking for the diamonds that started it all, but bumps into Czar, who beats him again with the diamond bat.

Back to Spider-Man, he is being chased by Logan, who at this point still has bone claws. He runs to hide and is about to be spotted until Logan is distracted by someone else - His older brother. I vaguely remember reading an issue in the bookshop, probably one of the first few Wolverine origin stories where his brother appears. Anyhow, Logan, who at this point in time still goes by the name James, gets some explosives thrown at him, at which point Spidey time travels a little a finally ends up face to face with Czar before he gets hit by the bat and ends up here.

By now, Logan and Spidey realize that they are being toyed with. Spider-Man has some good news though - he managed to steal a few diamonds. We find out at the end of the issue that everything that has been happening has just been a reality TV show for MOJO - some fat ASS that I've never heard of before. Check out more here

I don't read too much of Wolverine of X-Men, so I don't really know Wolverine's past or when the scene where Spider-Man was being chased was supposed to take place. But I absolutely love the way the teenage carefree Spider-Man that Wolverine encountered was portrayed here.

We also get to see Wolverine with some emotion as he looks at Peter with pity, knowing what lies ahead for the kid.
