SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN TEAM UP # 11

Before starting on the Superior Spider-Man # 30 review, I thought I should finish up the reviews for all the issues in between SSM # 29 and # 30. This issue, and probably the next, takes place in the thoughts of Doctor Octopus as he is being strangled by one of the Spider Slayers as seen at the end of Superior Spider-Man 29.

The Superior Spider-Man thinks back about how he had once tried to team up with Norman Osborn. He flashes back in time to a time, years after the Green Goblin's death, somewhere in Europe, probably during the time when Norman was taking care of Gwen's kids.

Otto, is invited to a mansion, where Norman's legacy continues to grow. Unsure, what to expect, Ock was surprised and downright frightened to see Norman Osborn still alive. Osborn essentially offers an alliance to help fight and destroy Spider-Man.

Though skeptical at first, Dr. Octopus agrees to join forces, and together they create new weapons designed
specifically to kill the Spider!

While everything was seemingly going well, Ock recalls a particular instance when Osborn shares a little about his past. He recalls his only friend - Emily, who was his wife who fell ill and died soon after the birth of Harry. Doc Ock in turn also shares about how he was once engaged to a woman named Mary Alice, but called the marriage off as advised by his mother, much to his disappointment and grief. When asked why he did not contact Mary Alice now, Ock responds by saying that he might do so after he has achieved his life goal- to be the greatest scientist that ever lived.

Upon hearing this, Osborn grows furious, stating that their goal should be to destroy Spider-Man. The argument soon becomes into a full on fight until Ock reminds Osborn that they are on the same side and that he too wants the destruction of Spider-Man. The two eventually come to terms and they continue working on new weapons.

After weeks of planing, Ock eventually returns to America, only to have received an abrupt call from Osborn, a week before their planned attack on Spider-Man. Osborn instructs Ock to meet him at the hospital.

When Ock arrives, Osborn explains how they have to attack now! When Doc Ock disagrees, Osborn explains how Ock had never experienced the pain as he had and thus cannot understand his need to attack now! In order to help Ock understand how he feels, he had arranged to for Ock's ex fiancee - Mary Alice to be involved in a road accident. He then shows her to him in that hospital, undergoing a blood transfusion which Osborn had poisoned!!

Thoughts

If there was anything to be learned from this issue, it is that the Green Goblin is not to be messed with. He is insane and will not stop at anything to cause hurt and pain of the deepest level.

While Dr Octopus often refers to himself as Spider-Man's greatest enemy, deep down he knows fully well that the Goblin is much more of a villain who desires pain for his enemies than he is.

At the beginning of the issue, Ock thinks to himself about how one can see the soul of a person by looking into their eyes. For Norman Osborn however, there is no soul in his eyes!

This issue of Superior Spider-Man team up, probably displays the most teaming up than all the other ten issues before this. There is genuine teaming up in this issue between the Goblin and Doc Ock.. for a period at least.

The following issue will tell us the end of this tale, and why Doc Ock fears the Green Goblin so much!
In the meantime, we have a review for Superior Spider-Man # 30 coming up real soon!
