"The Death of Spider-Man" and the Green Goblin's Shadow

Posted by Mister Mets 24 June 2011

This piece is going to include spoilers for Ultimate Spider-Man #160 AKA "The Death of Spider-Man" Part 5. Though I suspect it's rather difficult for anyone who is a big enough Spider-Man fan to come to this website to not know what happens in the story.

Aside from the most notable event in the story, there have been some discussions about the final page, and what it means for the future of the Ultimate Green Goblin.

And I'm reminded of what Bendis wrote in his introduction to a special reprint of Amazing Spider-Man #14:

This is it! This is the shadow every single comic book creator has been chasing for forty years, the long twisted shadow of the greatest comic book villain ever created, (no, not Rob Liefeld) Norman Osborn!

Oh, pipe down with your Joker talk and your Doctor Doom whining, I don't want to hear it! Norman Osborn was the finest villain ever concocted. And my point is extremely well illustrated in a recent issue of Tangled Web where comic book scribe Ron Zimmerman fashioned a scene with all of Spider-Man's villains sitting in a bar trading war stories. The issue ends with Norman Osborn revealing himself and bragging the ultimate Spider-Man villain brag: "I killed the woman he loves." The other villains fall silent. They have nothing to top that.

The Ultimate Green Goblin has managed to top the original, with an even nastier bit of super-villainy. He actually killed the hero, even if he needed a bullet from the Punisher and the aid of the rest of the Sinister Six to pull it off. This is arguably Bendis's version of "The Night Gwen Stacy Died."

It's possible that the Green Goblin died with a smile on his face, but it would fit Bendis's view of the character to have him survive. The Ultimate Universe no longer has Magneto or Doctor Doom. But they've still got the greatest comic book villain ever, according to the line's top writer. Except Osborn's now succeeded where no villain on his level succeeded.

And it's going to be a big deal when he battles Peter Parker's successor, the next Spider-Man.

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #157 Review

Posted by Adam Zenobi 18 April 2011

Ever wonder what would happen if Spidey's two biggest villains got into an all out brawl? Read on...
The Story

Spider-Man races home to warn Aunt May and Gwen Stacy that Norman Osborn and five of his other enemies have escaped S.H.I.E.L.D. custody.

Meanwhile at a penthouse somewhere in New York, Doctor Octopus, Electro, Sandman, Vulture and Kraven cannot believe their luck. With both of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s superhero teams at each other's throats they have the perfect opportunity to skip town. However, Norman has other plans, stating that they need to remain in New York. Doc Ock objects, saying that he no longer wants revenge on Spider-Man and simply wants to continue his work as a scientist. Ock's speech ticks off Norman who transforms into his goblin form and knocks Otto out the window. Ock is able to save himself with his magnetic powers, and he and the Goblin do battle on the street.

Spidey gets home and tells Gwen and Aunt May about Norman and the others. After saying goodbye, Gwen and Aunt May leave. Spider-Man heads off to find the Six.

Meanwhile the battle between the Green Goblin and Doc Ock continues. Ock's powers prove to be no match for the Goblin's raw power, and the Goblin proceeds to beat Otto to death.

Following all this on the news, Mary Jane phones Spidey to tell him what happened. Spider-Man quickly finds the doctor's corpse, but at this point Norman and the other villains have fled the scene. Wondering what to do next, Spider-Man swings past the bridge where the Ultimates and Avengers had their battle. Spider-Man sees that the Punisher is about to shoot Captain America with a sniper rifle. Acting quickly, Spidey pushes Cap out of the way, taking the bullet himself.

Thoughts
The highlight of this issue was definitely the Goblin/Doc Ock fight. I missed how well Mark Bagley staged a fight scene. Norman is completely unhinged at this point and Bagley captures it perfectly as we see the way Norman takes pleasure in pounding on poor Otto. I also enjoyed the little touches, such as the black tint in Otto's eyes as he accesses his powers, a la his traditional sunglasses.

Doc Ock's death definitely gives the Death of Spider-Man added weight, giving the reader a sense that anything can happen at this point. My only complaint here is that Ock's change of heart seemed a little sudden. Given all the horrible things he's done to Peter, his sudden lack of interest in revenge didn't feel natural. All of Ock's previous appearances have pretty much established him as a scumbag, and one that didn't feel worthy of redemption.

Spider-Man getting shot was... interesting. I gotta say that Spidey getting taken out by the Punisher because of an event which up until this point had nothing to do with Spider-Man is pretty lame. It's not hard to envision a wounded Spider-Man going up against the five villains and dying in the process. Still, there are several issues left to go in this storyline, and if the death of Doctor Octopus is any indication, Brian Michael Bendis likely has more surprises up his sleeve before this storyline concludes.

Clone Saga 5 of 6

Posted by bps 02 February 2010

This has to be the best of the Clone Saga series so far. To all Spider-Man fans out there, this issue is a must read, as it finally breaks away considerably from the original Clone Saga series in the 90's.

As readers expecting to see a repeat of the 90's Clone Saga, this issue is full of the unexpected. The art remains constant, as it has for the past four issue. The other thing that remains constant is the cover page, having absolutely nothing to do with the story. Nonetheless, this is a good cover page. Probably the only weird thing about the issue is the reference to iTunes, which did not exist back in the 90's.

Anyhow, here is the story. Continuing exactly where the preview left off, Peter decides to help take down Kaine as quickly as possible before rushing to Mary Jane, who is half way giving birth by now.

After an entertaining battle between the three 'Peter's,' Kaine disappears quietly as usual after placing the lives of the policemen in danger. The fight scene here is awesome, filled with cool moves from two Spider-Men.

As a first surprise, Peter arrives at the hospital in time to witness the birth of his living baby girl. Allison Mongrain, then takes the baby, and conveniently walks out of the hospital, throwing away the baby tag. The next scene obviously shows Peter furious that his child has gone missing. He and Ben, decide that Kaine is somehow related to all this.

The two set out to look for him. Elsewhere, Allison appears in a dark secluded area meeting with Kaine. She passes the baby to Kaine and states that she must leave the shores. At this point, Kaine, as evil as he is, is portrayed to have a very slight soft spot for the child, especially upon learning that her name is May.

Kaine then reports to his boss, who reminds Kaine that he must kill the child if their plan fails. Kaine's boss, aka the shadowy figure who looks like Harry Osborn, is then seen resurrecting Norman Osborn ( or his clone)

The comic ends with the absolute unexpected as the Goblin (Norman) battles with Ben, who was busy looking for Kaine. As they fight in mid air, the Goblin reveals to Ben that he knows who he is. he also reveals that Ben is the clone. As Ben tries create some distance between himself and the Green Goblin, he is stabbed in the back by the glider as seen below.

Some interesting way to end the issue now isn't it? Look out for the highly anticipated next issue, which will connect the dots to our confused minds. Hope you enjoy this long awaited review.

Norman Osborn's greatest fear?

Posted by bps 20 January 2010

I was reading Dark Avengers 11 and 12 again today. A while back, I did an extremely short review on Dark Avengers 1-10, thinking that Dark Avengers 11 would have something about Spider-Man worth writing about. Unfortunately, that was not the case, and I never got about reviewing the issue.

With Dark Avengers 13 ( featuring Siege) set for release today, I thought it might be worth doing a short review on some interesting points I found in Dark Avengers 12.

For starters, the first page of the issue shows Norman Osborn, in an imagination created by the Molecule man, being haunted by an ugly Spider-Man as depicted below.

By the end of the issue, we find out that Sentry, the not so smart Superman of the Marvel Universe has a ability to control molecules as well. This essentially makes him a better molecule man now doesn't it? Once again it appears that the Sentry's powers are limitless.

Molecule man was tricked into bringing the Dark Avengers back to life. While doing so he mentions that Norman Osborn may not exactly be the same as he had rearranged a couple of molecules in his brain. It does not take a genius to realize that Norman will be going even more mental with his alter ego rising in control, thanks to the few rearranged molecules.  Regardless, at the end of the issue, Sentry blows molecule man up in pieces as seen in the image.

We also see, even further at the end, Norman Osborn, going mental. Anyhow, this brings me to my title of the article.

What is Norman Osborn's greatest fear? Is it Spider-Man, or is it himself?

Dark Reign: The list- Amazing Spider-man

Posted by bps 21 November 2009

Dark Reign: The list Spider-man is the best Spider-man related comic I have read since Who was Ben Reilly? (Amazing Spider-Man 608,609,610) The story as we know involves Norman Osborn going through a checklist of things he wants done. As the cover page suggests, the last thing on his list is to kill Spider-man.

The art for this comic is spectacular. After reading comics with weird art like Amazing Spider-Man 611 and Amazing Spider-Man 612, this comic is like a pain killer. In the preview, we can see that Peter Parker is upset with himself for allowing Norman Osborn to rise to the power he currently holds. He, much like is American Son, is planning to take Norman down once and for all, through the press, again.

The story

The preview ends with Peter consulting with other "Frontline" staff, including Norah who managed to sneak into the Avengers Tower in American Son, on ways to expose Norman. Apparently, Norah had stolen some blueprints to the Avengers Tower during her last visit.

The next scene is most humorous as Norman is explaining to his secretary how he is going to kill Spider-man. He walks into the room and finds Spider-man sitting there, conviniently downloading some files into a pendrive.

Iron patriot grows furious and their reunion evolves into an ultimate showdown between the Iron Patriot and Spidey. Spider-man's humor during the fight never ceases to amaze me. After being hit by one of Iron Patriots beams, the public take it upon themselves to beat the friendly neighborhood Spider-man, as usual.

Elsewhere we see people all over New York watching the fight. Some rooting for Iron Patriot, while others, including Harry, supporting Spider-man. The fight ends with Spider-man barely making an escape in the crowd of civilians.

While searching the crowd, Norman spots Peter Parker who was sending the files in the pendrive to all his contacts, from the media. Norman, as the Iron Patriot tries to hurt Peter but is forced to stop when Peter explains that he is an American tax paying citizen. Make sure you read the panel below.

The story ends with Norah, absolutely mad at Peter for sending the files on the pendrive to Betty Brant, reporter of the DB, as well.

Following this, we see Ben Urich and Jessica Jones a couple of years ago ( Pre OMD), investigating an old murder by Norman Osborn, leading them to his office door. Upon reaching there however, they bump into the Green Goblin himself.

At this point the art changes, much to my liking, resembling the art during the JMS run.

This is essentially just an old story in which Luke Cage, boyfriend of the pregnant Jessica Jones, takes down Norman Osborn with Spider-man and exposing him as the Green Goblin. Ben Urich, now the owner of Frontline was the one who wrote the article exposing Norman Osborn for the Daily Bugle back then.

Personal thoughts - This comic was most enjoyable, and unexpected, even to the point of adding some old stories in with what I call 'good art.' Its interesting to read words like 'Daily Bugle' appearing, and 'Parker!' coming out from the mouth of the Goblin.

Siege Teaser with Spider-man

Posted by bps 07 November 2009

Siege is supposed to be the next big event that will take place in the Marvel Universe, after Dark Reign. I'm guessing soon after Norman fails to complete his final task on the list, his reign will come to an end. And there after we'll have Siege.

Isn't it funny how us readers know that Norman Osborn is going to fall from power soon. Yet he goes about trying to gain power. I wonder what Deadpool is thinking. After all, Deadpool himself knows he's in a comic doesn't he?

Below is the teaser for what will come in 'Siege.' It's obvious Spider-man does not die in Dark Reign -The list

Dark Avengers 1-10 quick summary

Posted by bps 30 October 2009

So due to hype created about Mephisto appearing in Dark Avengers #10, I took it upon myself to find a preview for Dark Avengers # 11. I actually like what I saw. As such, I decided to catch up on all the Dark Avengers's comics from 1 -10. Reviewing Dark Avengers will not be a normal thing here though.

In my opinion, the story is really nothing to jump for joy about. I like the team that Norman Osborn has put together however - a bunch of crooks that are doing good, in a way.

I do have a slight problem understanding how Sentry is still standing in issue # 10, after his head was blown off in issue # 9.

Towards the end of what I have read so far, Norman is being haunted by his old Goblin self. Also, I have a feeling that the Void, Sentry's/Bob's alter ego has taken control.

I find it strange that Daken is tall when he is not in his wolverine costume, but is as short as his father when he is wearing the costume.

Here is the jist of what I got.

  • Norman is now Iron Patriot, trying to control his Goblin personality from taking over his mind
  • The Sentry has two personalities - like Norman, and is trying to keep in under control, with Norman's help
  • Ms. Marvel / former Moonstone is a slut - makes the personal lives of the Dark Avengers interesting though
  • Noh- Varr is the Dark Capt. Marvel, who quits the team when he learns it is made up of villians
  • Ares is of course a Greek god of war. He has a son that he does not know how to show love to. His son, with his fathers knowledge - unknown to the rest of the team, is working under Nick Fury
  • Daken (Wolverine's son) is Wolverine with a mow-hawk.
  • Hawkeye or bullseye, has an interesting personality, but is mostly not interesting
  • Venom - Macgargan/ former Scorpion, is now Spider-man. He needs some medication to stop him from eating everyone. Not to mention keep his Spider-man image. Of late, he has been taking too much medication and is behaving feminine

And here is of course the image that raised hopes for Spider-man fans around the world.

Sins Past addressed in Dark Avengers # 11?

Posted by bps 28 October 2009

Okay,
So I do not usually, and have not been following the Dark Avengers. However, there has been some recent hype about Dark Avengers # 10 with the return of Mephisto. I have not yet read it, but I believe fans are hoping to see One More Day addresses in the next issue - Dark Avengers # 11

Here is a quick summary for what happened in Dark Avengers # 10 by Combustible Pumpkins on the Spider-man reviews discussion board.

To sum it up, folks were disappearing in a small town so Norman sent the Sentry over where he mysteriously disappears. Norman arrives shortly afterward with Hammer and the rest of the DA only for them to disappear as well. Last scene Norman's in front of five or six villains who were mostly cosmically or mystically powered, one of them being Mesphito. A lot of us were hoping the OMD deal would turn out a big event to straighten out BND's continuity since it's in quite a mess now.

Anyhow, I checked out the preview for Dark Avengers # 11 and saw this image

Although there is no dialogue in this preview, much like the previews for the Clone Saga, we can obviously tell that they will be addressing Gwen Stacy and her pregnancy from Norman, which as we know, resulted in the goblin twins being born. ( Sins Past )

For those of you who do not know, Sins Past was series before One more Day. In this series, it was revealed that Norman Osborn had sex with Gwen, who gave birth to two kids later. Obviously before she died.

These kids had abnormal growth due to the Goblin blood in them. They grew up faster than normal, were raised secretly by Norman to believe that Peter/ Spider-man and killed their mother. It was a very interesting, but controversial title.

As we know, since BND, no one, including Norman remembers Spider-man's identity. As such, there is no good reason why he would have killed Gwen Stacy. (Goblin killed Gwen as a way to get to Peter aka Spider-man).

Now that he no longer remembers, he must be confused as to the reason he killed her. The image above shows a floating pregnant Gwen, and Norman Osborn aka the green goblin aka leader of the Dark Avengers, in a Spider-man costume! How cool is that?

I will be getting this comic, and if it is worth reviewing, there will be a review up soon.
