Ultimate Comics Spider-Man V2 #5 Review

Posted by Adam Zenobi 22 December 2011

Miles Morales finally gets his proper costume as his first story arc draws to a close!

The Story

Spider-Woman confronts Miles and demands to know why he's dressed as Spider-Man and how he got his powers.  Miles isn't very forthcoming, so the impatient Spider-Woman webs him up and unmasks him.  Miles attempts to hop away but ends up tripping and knocking himself out.

Miles wakes up in a cell at the Triskelion, where Spider-Woman, Nick Fury, Iron Man and Hawkeye are examining him.  After Iron Man confirms that Miles has spider powers similar to those of Peter Parker, Fury asks for a moment alone with Miles.  Fury and Miles have a heart-to-heart about how Miles got his powers and why he's decided to take up Spider-Man's mantle.  Fury also informs Miles that he knows about his Uncle Aaron's criminal activities, and that the FBI calls him the Prowler.

Meanwhile, Electro wakes up in the medical wing of the Triskelion and immediately begins wreaking havoc.  Iron Man, Hawkeye and Spider-Woman attempt to stop him, but Electro takes them all out.  Fury takes Miles out of his cell and attempts to stop Electro himself but has no luck.  Using his camouflage powers, Miles is able to sneak up behind Electro and hit him with a crate.  Miles then hits Electro with his venom blast, disrupting his powers and allowing Fury to shoot him.

The next day at school Miles tells Ganke about what happened.  The two are then confronted by Jessica Drew who hands Miles a brief case and apologizes for the way she treated him earlier.  Before leaving she warns Miles that he has one chance to prove himself.  When Miles opens the briefcase, he finds a brand new black and red Spider-Man costume.

Thoughts

Given the slow pace Brian Michael Bendis was taking Miles' journey to becoming Spider-Man in the first four issues, this issue's fast pace was a little jarring.  My main problem was how quickly Nick Fury seems ready to support Miles' decision to become Spider-Man.  Given his reaction to Peter's death in Ultimate Fallout, you would think that he would be more reluctant to let another young kid put his life on the line.  Plus he had to be aware of how easily Spider-Woman took him out.  Sure, Miles beat Electro, but that was more luck than anything.

Although it's nice to have Miles ready to begin his career as Spider-Man, this issue was not as strong as the last four; a weak ending to an otherwise strong origin story.

Miles Morales witnesses the death of Spider-Man!

The Story

After hearing that Spider-Man has just been shot, Miles asks Ganke to cover for him and sneaks out of the gymnasium.  He leaps from rooftop to rooftop as Spider-Man has his final battle with the Green Goblin.  After seeing an explosion coming from Queens, Miles rushes over and arrives just in time to witness Peter Parker die in Aunt May's arms.

Later, Miles tells Ganke about what happened.  Miles feels that had he become a hero when he first got his powers he might have been able to prevent Peter's death.  Ganke points out that maybe the reason Miles got his powers was to be the new Spider-Man.

Miles and Ganke join the large crowd at Peter's funeral and manage to see Aunt May and Gwen Stacy enter the cathedral.  Miles asks Gwen why Peter became Spider-Man, and after some reluctance Gwen tells him what happened to Peter's Uncle Ben.

Ganke buys Miles a store bought Spider-Man outfit.  Miles thinks wearing the costume is in bad taste, but tries it on anyway.  That night, as Miles leaps from rooftop to rooftop in his Spidey outfit, he hears an alarm and goes to investigate.  What follows is the fight Miles has with the Kangaroo in Ultimate Comics Fallout #4.

When Miles returns home he finds out that the Daily Bugle has already trashed him online.  He then almost gets caught in his Spider-Man outfit by his other roommate, Judge.

The next night Miles goes out on patrol again, but is stopped dead in his tracks by Spider-Woman, who is clearly offended by Miles' costume.

Thoughts

With this issue Brian Michael Bendis ties Miles' motivation directly to Peter Parker, with Peter becoming an Uncle Ben-like figure for Miles to aspire to.  Fans cheesed off by Peter's death should note that he still has a strong presence in the book, offering an interesting new take on the Spider-Man story.  Seeing the Ultimate Universe through Miles' eyes makes it feel fresh and exciting again, and Miles' interaction with Peter Parker's female clone next issue should be anything but boring.  Sara Pichelli, as always, continues to knock it out of the park with her artwork.

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man continues to be one of the best Spidey books on the stands.  Definitely a must-buy!

Jessica Drew in Spider-Island

Posted by bulletproofsponge 10 June 2011

As if we didn't suspect this already, Spider-Woman aka Jessica Drew will also be getting a title in the Spider-Island event taking place.

“In SPIDER-ISLAND: SPIDER-WOMAN, Jessica Drew goes on a very important mission from Reed Richards that dates back to one of her very first adventures—with [The Thing], in fact, [from] the pages of MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE,” says writer Fred Van Lente. “And that leads her into a head-to-head confrontation with a revamped villain from Spider-Woman's own rogue's gallery, now in cahoots with The Jackal.”

Spider-Island: Spider Woman will be on sale in September. Click here for more Spider-Island news!

This free issue happens to be one of the better Spider-Man stories of late. For starters, this issue is perfect as it gives new readers a quick update on all that has been happening with Spider-Man, namely his new job, joining the Avengers and the FF as well as losing his Spider sense.

Something tells me that unless Spider-Man dies and is reborn for a second time, we aren't going to be seeing his Spider sense any more. Julia Carpenter, the second Spider-Woman and the new Madame Web plays a significant role here as does Spider-Woman ( Jessica Drew)

The Story.
It starts with Madame Web, seeing through the "Web," muttering to herself Spider-Man's history. She has also noticed that Spider-Man no longer possesses his Spider sense and is thus no longer has such "great" power, yet holds much responsibility.

In the issue, Spider-Man is getting his ass kicked by Spider-Woman. Spider-Woman is being mind controlled by the Mandrill - a big baboon who can mind control all women.

In a distance, the young and blind, but able to walk talk and move without any trouble, Madame Web, meets with the great Kung-Fu master- Shang-Chi. She knew this fight would take place and requested for Shang-Chi to watch the fight. Shang -Chi notices how Spider-Woman has excellent fighting form, while Spider-Man, without his Spider sense, is just fumbling around hoping to land some punches.

Spider-Man is clearly no match to Spider-Woman. Anyway, Spider-Man eventually manages to "wake" his friend cum enemy up by crashing into a shelf of perfume. Covered with the strong perfume smell, Mandrill's pheromones released on Spider-Woman loses its effect when she smells Spider-Man.

Mandrill is later caught and sent to prison. Shang-Chi, later approaches Spider-Man, indirectly offering to teach him Kung-Fu, seeing that he really sucked out there. A few weeks later, Spider-Man is pretty good at Kung-Fu. Shang-Chi states that he is half way done, and now needs to learn to use the Kung Fu with his Spider-Powers.

Elsewhere, Madame Web smiles as there is a glimmer of hope for Spider-Man. She also sees that all over the city, people are gaining Spider-powers, including Mary Jane. It is also implied that Anti-venom is going to die, and that Doc Ock, maybe the person whom no one knows about, that is working next to Peter in Horizon Labs.

Thoughts
I really enjoyed this issue. The art was perfect as was the story. It was a perfect build up for what is coming in issue 666. It really is a wonder why Spider-Man never bothered to learn Kung-Fu before. I'd imagine he would be unstoppable if he had Kung Fu abilities and his Spider-sense working for him.

Among the better scenes in this issue include this one scene where Spider-Man simply abuses his Avenger's membership, charging all damage expenses to Tony Stark, and even trying to get away with a free hot dog, simply by stating he's an Avenger.

New Avengers 60 and 61 quick review

Posted by bps 01 February 2010

As we all know, Spider-Man has been pat of the Avengers for a number of years now. Of late his presence in the team has become more prominent as he has become more comfortable with his role as an Avenger.

In the last short review for New Avengers, Luke cage had been rescued from the Dark Avengers. However, it was revealed, to the reader, that a tiny device of some sort had been planted on Luke's heart. (New Avengers 59 )

In New Avengers 60, the former Sorcerer Supreme - Dr Strange, uses to magic and sees the device on Luke's heart. To fix the problem, Dr Pym aka the Wasp, whose super ability is to turn extremely  small, among other things, shrinks himself and Dr Strange so small, that they are able to enter Luke's body through the nostrils.

Spider-Man as usual, just has to fit in his funny comments.

Upon trying to remove it, the signal the device is transmitting changes to that of a bomb. Fortunately, Dr Strange is able to teleport the bomb to Norman Osborn's own house before it detonates.

New Avengers 61 has more of Spidey, and a fair amount of the Captain Americas - Bucky and Steve Rogers.

This story starts with the Red Hood, who is back in town, revealing that he has the new ability to increase the power levels of whomever he chooses. Steve and Bucky are watching the HAMMER agents, searching their former hideout - which is now a pile of rubble.

Somewhere along the line, their cover gets blown and the two get separated. Bucky, through the use of some chemicals, gets mind controlled, by 'The Corrupter,' and is forced to kill Steve Rogers. As Bucky shoots Steve with his gun, the bullet is deflected by Steve Roger's shield, and through some fantastic series of events, somehow hits the 'The Corrupter' in the neck. The two make a run for it, only to be cornered by another super villain.

This is precisely the reason why I do not like Captain America. First of all, why is Bucky carrying a gun? Forgive me for my lack of interest in the character. However, I must ask the same questions that even the bad guys in the comic are asking.

What really attracts me to this issue is that we get a lot of time with Spider-Man. Spider-Man and Spider-Woman have some light conversation, as they watch the Avengers tower. As they talk about a number of things, such as Norman Osborn. Somewhere along the line there is some short reference to Spider-Man being married as well.

Anyhow, with the Hood's men having heightened superpowers, two ugly looking crooks are able to spot Spider-Man and Spider-Woman, from a very far distance. Spider-Woman ends up being mind controlled and shoots Spider-Man off the building. As if that will stop him.

She is finally forced to point out the Avenger's hideout.

Overall, these are good issues. Certainly I must say that New Avengers 61 is the better of the two. It is also a tie in issue to Siege. Good to see some nice art here as well.

Incredible Hercules 138

Posted by bps 04 December 2009

I have contemplated several times on whether or not I should review this issue. The issue primarily revolves around Hercules and involves very little of Spider-man. Quite expected actually. Nonetheless.

As we know Spider-man was quite involved in the prologue to this issue ( Assault on New Olympus # 1 Partial review). In the prologue, it is learned that Hera, wife of Zeus, who is now a little child, is planning to wipe out the iron age of humanity. Apparently, humans have been wiped out and forced to restart civilization several times already.

Athena, Hercules sister has been trying to round up some allies to take Hera down. The panel below explains everything clearly.

In issue 138, Athena explains to Amadeus Cho. That this battle will claim Hercules' life, and that he must arise as the next Prince of Power. Amadeus, not wanting to let Herc down, refuses to believe this and is determined to ensure Hercules' survival. Being the 7th smartest person in the world, Amadeus devises his plan to take down Hera. At one point he actually tries to warn Hercules and tries to give him some water he stole from the River Lithe. See right.

Hercules is however too proud to think anything would happen to him. The plan is later unveiled as Hebe, along with all brother's and sister's are called to meet with Hera. Hera explains her plan to Hebe, who already knows it, only to hear from the 'all seeing eye' that Hebe is a traitor. Hera blasts her daughter into the ground. An ambulance later comes carrying Hercules, the Avengers, and etc.

We find out that Ares, Hera's strongest son, will not be joining her in the fight as he is being seduced by Aphrodite. Good trick.

Toward the end of the issue, we see the god of death appearing stating that he will claim one of their lives in the war.

Something interesting

Apparently in Marvel Comics, the Olympian gods aren't really gods, but simply almost equal to our superhero's. Read this two panels below. Pretty interesting. it certainly makes the battle easier, else if they truly were gods, its impossible to fight them.

Overall, this story proves to be very interesting. Definitely worth buying. I am unsure however if I should continue to review this comic as it is not really related to Spider-man. What do you think? Thanks for reading. -bulletproofsponge

Amazing spider-man 611

Posted by bps 13 November 2009

As most Spider-man fans would probably agree, there was nothing special at all about this comic issue. For starters, as we all expected from the preview, the art was not that eye-friendly.

The story line was rather shallow, although it does create
the foundation for a bigger event that will be coming soon. Humor in the comic was rather interesting.

It has to be expected, putting Deadpool and Spider-man together in one comic, although I am not so sure it would be very appealing to younger readers. The humor is hard to follow as Deadpool, as usual, is constantly talking to himself.

As if the art was not bad enough, this comic had to feature Deadpool without his mask, uncovering his hideous face.

The story
For those following the Amazing Spider-man comic, you would recall a random appearance of Madam Web, apparently being held hostage by an anonymous character, being forced to reveal Spider-man's whereabouts. For those who have not been following, the above situation took place in Amazing spider-man 606. The Panel can be found here

Amazing Spider-man 611 takes off from there. Madam Web is being held captive by Kraven the hunter's wife and her daughter, Ana. Kraven's wife and her daughter have been appearing in several issues, recruiting villains to help take down Spider-man. ( ASM 604, ASM 607 )

The issue starts with Deadpool receiving a phone call to do an unknown assignment. The Kraven family is later seen holding Madam Web captive. Peter Parker is having is typical bad day, as portrayed in the Spider-man Movies. He ends up taking on a lame villain called Lady Stilt-man. How contradicting

Deadpool eventually comes into the picture and helps Spider-man out. He next creates some problems for Spider-man that have absolutely nothing to do with the story. In fact, it is learned that Deadpool's entire presence was nothing more than a distraction for something bigger planned by the Kraven family.

Spider-man was distracted from meeting with Anya Corazon, battling Eddie Brock, and meeting (an extremely ugly) Spider-woman. To what purpose this served is unknown to the reader.

However, Spider-woman is seen, caught, and captured by the Kraven family as a part of their plan to take down Spider-man.

Personal Thoughts
A short, boring, almost pointless issue with bad art and interesting humor. It does keep the reader interested to know what this plan is that the Kraven family is cooking.

Ps. Spider-woman here is really ugly

Quick Summary on what has been taking place in the Incredible Hercules comics, and how does it relate to Spider-man.

Of late, it was discovered that Hera, wife of Zeus and mother of many has been stirring up an evil plan to destroy the world. Amadeus has convinced Hercules to gather up an army to take her down before she can strike.

Peter Parker was introduced to Hebe ( wife of Hercules ), who has been having marital problems for a thousand years. (You just hit the JackPot- Peter Parker). This is entry follows up on what happened immediately with Spider-man after his encounter with Hebe. This is not exactly a review of the whole comic. Only the parts that involve Spider-man.

Partial review
Peter was introduced to her by Aunt May, as Hebe was helping out there as a volunteer in the homeless shelter. He is next seen flirting, in some way, with Hebe, who for your information is the goddess of youth.

At one point, Hebe mentions how Aunt May wants to see Peter married. Apparently Aunt May does not want Peter marrying any Red-Heads. The conversation goes on as Hebe explains how she is actually Hercules wife. She feels rejected by him as he seemed to grow more distant from her and eventually disappeared in person ( left Olympus).

As she pours out her feelings to Peter, he pretty much comforts her, and very quickly develops feelings for her. Hebe blames herself for not making the marriage work and struggles to figure out what she did wrong. Peter Parker, with his new BND character moves in to kiss her. As their lips lock, his Spider-sense start going haywire.

Peter opens an eye to see whats going on, only to be greeted by a furious Hercules. The entire fight scene between the two is rather comical. One of the more entertaining fight scenes. Regardless, the fight ends with Hebe coming to the rescue, and Herc explaining to her why he acted the way he did towards her before.

It all has a happy ending between the two. Thankfully, Peter does not end up with Hebe. Despite her attractive character, Peter does not belong with the goddess of youth.

The comic ends with Spider-man, Spider-woman, and wolverine ( and most probably some others ), joining forces to help take down Hera.

New Avengers # 59 cover

Posted by bps 09 November 2009

Of late, content in Spider-man Reviews appear to contain a large number of covers in which Spider-man appears in other comic besides his own Amazing Spider-man series. Some include:

  1. Dark Reign: The list - Spider-man
  2. Incredible Hercules # 138
  3. Siege teaser
Here we have the latest cover for New Avengers # 59 featuring Spider- Woman and Spider-man Back to back, set for release on November 25th, the same day Incredible Hercules comes out.

Spider-man and woman, with torn clothes, losing a battle against someone. Once again, I do not usually follow the New Avengers, but looks like I will be getting this one, for the sake of staying on top of things here. Review for the issue may or may not be up, depending on the importance of the issue to the ASM comics. Regardless, something will definitely be up in the "More Comic Stuffs" menu.

Check out this abstract of an interview from here

On Peter Parker's growth:

Bendis: "I also think that Spider-Man has become more and more comfortable with his role as an Avenger, and you'll see less and less of the nervous chatter and more of him as a voice of moral reason, being the man who exudes power and responsibility."
