Moon Knight #3-4 Review

Posted by Adam Zenobi 17 August 2011

Moon Knight and Echo team up to take down the kingpin of L.A.!
Issue #3

Marc Spector phones Maya Lopez (Echo) and asks her to meet him to discuss potentially working together. After giving her the location, he hangs up and visits his weapons consultant; Buck Lime. Spector shows the Ultron head to Buck, who confirms that it's the real deal.

Flashback to three months ago; Marc Spector interviews Buck Lime to be a "consultant" for his television series. Spector reveals to Buck that he is Moon Knight and that he knows that Buck used to work for S.H.I.E.L.D. Buck reluctantly accepts Spector's offer to work with him, though Spector still isn't sure he can trust him.

Later that night Buck is attacked by Bullseye in his apartment. Bullseye ties Buck up and demands that he tell him everything he knows about Marc Spector. Although scared at first, Buck quickly realizes that "Bullseye" is actually Marc Spector, and that the whole thing was a loyalty test. Despite being mad at Marc, Buck decides to continue working for him.
In the present, Snapdragon assembles a group of supervillains called the Night Shift to take down Moon Knight.

Issue #4

Echo phones the New Avengers to find out if Moon Knight can be trusted. They vouch that Moon Knight is on the Secret Avengers and that Captain America trusts him.

That night, Marc Spector sits on a park bench, talking to his Spider-Man, Wolverine and Captain America personalities while waiting for Echo to show up. Echo arrives and the two of them compare notes before being confronted by the Night Shift. Working together, Moon Knight and Echo easily beat the Night Shift, but are then surrounded by the police...

Thoughts

Four issues in, Bendis continues to impress with Moon Knight. Moon Knight's interactions with both his supporting cast and his other personalities are great fun to read. Bendis has taken everything I found interesting about the character and put it in this comic, portraying Moon Knight as a highly intelligent but extremely eccentric superhero. He and Echo make a surprisingly great pair and I'm looking forward to reading more of their partnership.

Then there's Alex Maleev, who is kicking ass on this book. Scenes like "Bullseye" breaking into Buck's apartment and the fight with the Night Shift are crafted beautifully. Moon Knight is a great solo superhero series that you should definitely check out.

Spidey gets his ass kicked.
The Story

The story starts with Bullseye giving Spidey a sound beating in front of a crowd of people.

Three hours before that; Peter Parker's girlfriend "Chat" (who has the mutant ability to talk to animals) asks him if he can take care of her pet owl "Flapper" for the afternoon to which Peter agrees.

Two and a half hours before; George Stacy gets into an argument with his daughter Gwen about her dating Carter Torino, whose family runs the maggia. The argument ends with Gwen storming out of the apartment.

Two hours before; Spider-Man saves a man from getting mugged, but gets a mixed reaction from a crowd of people.

One hour before; Carter tries to get his Dad to back off of Spider-Man but has no luck.

Bullseye knocks a cat off a building but Spider-Man manages to save it (not knowing Bullseye was responsible). Bullseye then decides its time for him to finally confront Spider-Man.

Spidey meets up with Chat in an alleyway when the two are suddenly attacked by Bullseye. Spider-Man tells Chat to run and engages Bullseye. Using his superior fighting skills Bullseye quickly gains the upperhand. During the fight Bullseye uses one of his projectiles to blow up a gas tank and Spidey gets caught in the blast. Critically injured, Spider-Man attempts to escape by scaling the side of a building. Unfortunately for him, Bullseye makes it to the roof before him. Bullseye throws a blade into the air, slams Spidey to the ground, and waits for the blade to land in Spidey's head. Spider-Man is saved by Flapper, who puts himself into the path of the blade. Angered, Spider-Man summons the strength to knock Bullseye off the roof; a fire engine breaks his fall. Critically injured and exhausted, Spider-Man collapses.

Thoughts

Spider-Man's fight with Bullseye was surprisingly brutal for a kid's book. Paul Tobin does a good job of making the character work in an all ages title without watering him down. Although Bullseye doesn't kill any people this issue, he did get to murder several innocent birds, making him an instant hero to statues and car owners everywhere.

Although not much of interest happens beyond the fight with Bullseye (which was awesome) this was still the best installment of Marvel Adventures Spidey since the title's relaunch.

Shadowland part 1 Review

Posted by matthewaos 30 August 2010

Daredevil has been leading the hand for quite some time now. He tries to make good use of it but issue after issue it consumes him more. He is building a prison in Hell's Kitchen cause he does not trust the police, they can be bribed. In Shadowland stars Daredevil, Punisher, Spider-Man, Moon Knight, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and more. I will seperate the reviews in five parts, with the mini series as the main attraction, and a reference to all the other tie ins of the month.

Shadowland #1 starts with the inner circle of the hand, knowing that they have trapped Daredevil (and the White Tiger has been shown in previous issues working for them) making some ceremony, talking about Snakeroot.

In New York, a plane transfers Bullsey, cahined up. He starts saying crazy (and funny) stuff about the Sentry, so as to scare the guards. With a very clever way he manages to kill them all and escape, bringing the plane is Shadowland.

At Avengers Tower, Luke Cage seems very worried about Matt while Iron Fist tries to calm him, though he has heard of some disappearances. The two have come to talk to the other Avengers, Iron Man, Thor Captain America, for some advice. They tell him to talk to him, and tell him that they have his back. But only if Shadowland is strictly temporary.

Bullseye in Shadowland tries to bring Matt out, and he does and we see his black costume for the first time. He is along with several ninjas. They fight hard, but Daredevil is not like he used to be, he is cold now. Bullseye realises this but not in time, as Daredevil puts a sai through his chest!

Daredevil #508
gives us Foggy's Blake's and Dakot'a perspective of the story, trying to contact Matt. We also see Master Izo working with Elektra and Daredevil in a privete momment where he seems like beening possessed or something.

In general, an interesting start. My only problem is that death has been something hard to believe in comics, so I doubt Bullseye is dead, but I'm gonna believe it for the benefit of the story. To be honest though I'm not impressed by Tan's art. He sure has some good momments but he is not my cup of tea. Spider-Man does not appear at all in the first month of Shadowland, but if you like street level characters you should pick this I think, maybe it's just marvel's hype machine, but I am very excited about it for quite some time now!

Spidey and Shang Chi vs. Ninjas!!!
The Story

Walking home from the grocery store, Peter Parker stops to admire a young woman's pug dog named Attila. Suddenly, some thugs on motorized scooters swoop in and snatch the dog for some reason. Changing into Spider-Man, Peter is able to make quick work of the thugs and rescue Attila. Unfortunately, he cannot relocate his owner.

Twenty minutes later, Peter meets Sophia Sanduval (his girlfriend) in a park. Sophia is a mutant who is able to communicate with animals. In addition to being lame, her powers prove unhelpful, as Attila cannot identify his owner in a way humans could understand.

In his civilian guise, Bullseye tracks down Carter Torino, a decent guy whose grandfather happens to be the head of the Torino crime family. Bullseye wants Carter to convince his grandfather to raise the bounty on Spider-Man's head. Carter refuses to help him, claiming that he supports Spider-Man. Bullseye tells Carter that after Spider-Man, he is coming for him next.

At school the next day, Peter (who has brought Attila with him) and Sophia discuss potential new superhero identities for himself, as Spider-Man gets so much bad press. Unbeknownst to them, a supervillain called Midnight enters the school through the roof with a group of ninjas. Once inside, two of the ninjas disguise themselves as janitors.

Peter gives Shang Chi, who is at Midtown give a martial arts demonstration, directions to the gymnasium. Peter is then called to the Principal's office. The principal introduces Peter to Carter Torino and asks him to give Carter a tour of the school. During the tour Peter introduces Carter to Sophia and Gwen Stacy. Gwen quickly takes a liking to Carter.

The four teens plus Attila then head to Shang Chi's martial arts demonstration. During the demo Shang Chi is attacked by Midnight and his group of ninjas. Thanks to a distraction by Sophia, Peter is able to change into Spider-Man and assist the martial arts master. Together they take out the ninjas and defeat Midnight. Shang Chi then takes Attila, whose owner is a friend of his.

Thoughts

With the origin recapped on the first page and an introduction to the supporting cast; this was the introductory issue I was expecting from issue #1. What makes this book interesting is that it is a completely different Spider-Man experience from the other titles on the stands. It has a unique supporting cast; Sophia is likable as Peter's girlfriend and Carter's mob family gives him interesting baggage. Spidey also fights baddies that he normally does not go up against in other books. Prior to reading this issue, I had no idea who Midnight was, now I do. Better yet, young Marvel fans who read this now know who Midnight is, thus giving them the opportunity to outdork their older counterparts. If that does not justify this book's existence, I don't know what does.

Dark Avengers 1-10 quick summary

Posted by bps 30 October 2009

So due to hype created about Mephisto appearing in Dark Avengers #10, I took it upon myself to find a preview for Dark Avengers # 11. I actually like what I saw. As such, I decided to catch up on all the Dark Avengers's comics from 1 -10. Reviewing Dark Avengers will not be a normal thing here though.

In my opinion, the story is really nothing to jump for joy about. I like the team that Norman Osborn has put together however - a bunch of crooks that are doing good, in a way.

I do have a slight problem understanding how Sentry is still standing in issue # 10, after his head was blown off in issue # 9.

Towards the end of what I have read so far, Norman is being haunted by his old Goblin self. Also, I have a feeling that the Void, Sentry's/Bob's alter ego has taken control.

I find it strange that Daken is tall when he is not in his wolverine costume, but is as short as his father when he is wearing the costume.

Here is the jist of what I got.

  • Norman is now Iron Patriot, trying to control his Goblin personality from taking over his mind
  • The Sentry has two personalities - like Norman, and is trying to keep in under control, with Norman's help
  • Ms. Marvel / former Moonstone is a slut - makes the personal lives of the Dark Avengers interesting though
  • Noh- Varr is the Dark Capt. Marvel, who quits the team when he learns it is made up of villians
  • Ares is of course a Greek god of war. He has a son that he does not know how to show love to. His son, with his fathers knowledge - unknown to the rest of the team, is working under Nick Fury
  • Daken (Wolverine's son) is Wolverine with a mow-hawk.
  • Hawkeye or bullseye, has an interesting personality, but is mostly not interesting
  • Venom - Macgargan/ former Scorpion, is now Spider-man. He needs some medication to stop him from eating everyone. Not to mention keep his Spider-man image. Of late, he has been taking too much medication and is behaving feminine

And here is of course the image that raised hopes for Spider-man fans around the world.
