Spider-Man: Edge of Time (PS3/Xbox 360) Review

Posted by Adam Zenobi 04 December 2011

Given the negative reviews Spider-Man: Edge of Time was getting on conventional gaming sites, I decided to wait for a sale before diving into the latest Spidey offering from Activison and Beenox.  Which turned out to be much sooner than I expected; when I walked into my local GameStop this week, Spider-Man: Edge of Time was on sale for half price!  So is the game really as bad as the internet says?

The Story
Spider-Man: Edge of Time features a story made in collaboration with legendary Spider-Scribe (and creator of Spider-Man 2099) Peter David.  In 2099, a scientist from the Alchemax Corporation named Walter Sloan travels back to the present day and starts the Alchemax Corporation several years before it was originally founded.  Spider-Man 2099 attempts to follow Sloan through time but instead gets caught between time periods.  Because of this, he is unaffected by the changes Sloan makes to the past and is able to see a vision of the future in which Anti Venom kills the original Spider-Man.  Sloan uses his knowledge to make Alchemax into a powerful corporation, with his actions changing certain aspects of the Marvel Universe (Peter Parker now works for Alchemax instead of the Daily Bugle, Otto Octavius never becomes Doctor Octopus, Adrian Toomes owns a fast food chain that serves chicken) while leaving other aspects intact (Peter Parker is still Spider-Man, Anti Venom is still around).  When Spider-Man 2099 gets back to his time period, he is able to create a link between himself and Peter Parker.  The two agree to work together to stop Sloan.

The most disappointing aspect of Edge of Time’s story as compared to previous Spider-Man games was how few Spider-Man characters actually show up.  Anti Venom, Black Cat and Doc Ock are the only villains who make an appearance.  Compare that to how many characters we got to see in Beenox’s previous game, Shattered Dimensions, and it’s fairly disappointing.  Mary Jane also appears in the game, but only in a typical “damsel in distress” role.
The highlight of the game’s story was the banter between the two Spider-Men.  I liked how the youthful energy of the present Spidey contrasted the more cynical Spider-Man of 2099.  Watching these two get on each other’s nerves and eventually develop a friendship as the game progresses keeps you invested despite the sometimes tedious gameplay.  In addition, the story does throw you a cool twist at the end of act II, one that will make you want to play through to the end.

As a nice touch, Daily Bugle headlines will appear on the corner of the screen showing the changes being made to the time stream as you play.
Gameplay

The biggest drawback to Edge of Time is that the entire game takes place inside one large building, meaning neither Spider-Man ever gets to step outside.  Gameplay consists of: entering a room, beating up all the baddies in the room, finding the key or console that unlocks the door to the next room, repeat.  Each level also has a set of optional challenges, which if met will allow you to unlock alternate costumes.  As Spider-Man 2099, you’ll sometimes have to navigate through a free fall sequence, but the imprecise controls make these sequences a chore.
The two Spider-Men (who you will switch back and forth between) have identical move sets consisting of a light attack, a heavy attack and web shots.  In addition, both Spider-Men have the ability to freeze time around them, stopping enemies dead in their tracks.  Where things slightly differ between the two is in how each Spidey can dodge enemy attacks.  Spider-Man can activate his spider-sense, causing him to move at a super speed, while Spider-Man 2099 can create a decoy of himself to distract enemies.  Each Spider-Man can upgrade his move set by collecting experience, both by defeating enemies and by collecting the orbs littered throughout each level.

Boss battles are few and far between and are far less impressive than they were in Shattered Dimensions.  With the exception of the final boss fight, there’s not much to distinguish the bosses from regular enemies except for their much larger health bars.
Graphics

The character models in Edge of Time look great, with Spider-Man 2099 being the standout; his suit exhibits a very sleek, futuristic glow.  Everything else however, looks unremarkable.  Again, the game takes place in one giant building, and a fairly uninteresting one at that.  Arkham Asylum this is not.

Audio

The voice acting in the game is superb, with the highlights obviously being Josh Keaton (of the tragically short lived Spectacular Spider-Man animated series) as the present day Spider-Man and Christopher Daniel Barnes (of Spider-Man: TAS, and who will always be Spider-Man for me) as Spidey 2099.  Although it’s great to hear Barnes again, Keaton really steals the show here, playing not only Spidey but another character who I won’t mention here to avoid spoilers.  Suffice to say, Keaton has a lot of range as a voice actor and was a brilliant choice to play Spider-Man.
The rest of the audio, from the sound effects to the score, gets the job done nicely.

Overall
Spider-Man: Edge of Time fails to live up to the greatness of its predecessor.  One level of Shattered Dimensions packs more variety and content then the entirety of Edge of Time.  The terrific voice acting and solid story make the game worth picking up for Spider-Man fans, but only if they can find it on sale.  Despite my complaints, I still stayed up until 4 in the morning to beat the game, which says something.  Thanks Beenox!
Rating: 3/5

Edge of Time: Not so great reviews

Posted by bulletproofsponge 27 October 2011

-After all the hype over the latest Spider-Man game - Edge of Time, we find that majority of the reviews online aren't all that great. Some of the points highlighted were that:

  1. Too much of the game play was indoors ( Spider-Man should be an outdoors guy doing fancy swinging moves)
  2. Game was too short and easy
  3. Fighting is repetitive ( Same moves for both Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099)
  4. Voice overs were excellent
  5. Plot was interesting

Spider-Man Edge of Time: Behind the scenes

Posted by bulletproofsponge 22 August 2011

Of late, we have been given the privilege of viewing some behind the scene clips of the new Spider-Man Edge of Time video game, set for release this October!

While, I may not be much of a video game guy, which totally explains why I take so long to post video game news up on the site, watching these behind the scene clips does make me pretty interested to know the story behind the game. Below we have scenes of Mary Jane, Felicia/ Black Cat, or at least a clone of her, our crook in the game ( Walter Sloan ), and Anti-Venom, who appears to be mind controlled.

Spider-Man Edge of time trailer

Posted by bulletproofsponge 04 June 2011

Seeing that every other Spider-Man website out there is sharing the Spider-Man: Edge of Time game trailer, I figured, we might as well do the same. Edge of time will be the newest Spider-Man game developed Beenox, following last year's Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions game.

As far as we know, this game revolves around the Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099. Players will switch between characters, preventing a catastrophe, caused by an evil scientist from the year 2099.

( Talk about creative)

Top 10 Spidey Videogames

Posted by Adam Zenobi 09 September 2010

In honour of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions I have compiled a top 10 list of the Webhead's greatest videogame exploits.

10. Spider-Man: The Sinister Six (PC)

Ah, the first Spider-Man game I ever owned. What was cool about it was that you got to play as both Spider-Man and Peter Parker. The player would have to make choices that would effect the events of the storyline and its eventual outcome. Another cool feature was that you got to have conversations with the characters and choose how Peter/Spidey would react to different situations and people. It was like a primitive BioWare RPG. Gameplay also consisted of fun puzzle solving and lame point-and-click combat. It wasn't an extraordinary game, but there's never been another Spider-Man game like it.

9. Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro (PlayStation)
This underrated sequel may not have made many improvements over the first game, but it really didn't have to. Enter Electro was just as fun as the first game. But what made it truly stand out was the unlockables. Almost every alternate outfit that Spidey wore at that point could be unlocked in the game. Dusk? Prodigy? Spider-Phoenix? They were all there. If that weren't enough, the create-a-spider feature allowed you to pick a costume and customize what enhanced abilities your Spider-Man would have.

8. Spider-Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage (Genesis, SNES)

A child of the nineties, I was a late bloomer when it came to videogames. My father seemed to think that they would rot by brain and thus my childhood was Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo free. Fortunately one of my friends had a Genesis and one of his games was Maximum Carnage. I remember the game blowing my mind by not only allowing me to control Spidey but Venom as well. I was so impressed that I had to show it to my Spider-Man loving father when he came to pick me up. Surely a Spider-Man game would cause him to reevaluate his stance on videogames right? He wasn't impressed.

7. Spider-Man: Mysterio's Menace (GBA)

Until Mysterio's Menace I always hated handheld Spider-Man games. I couldn't stand the crappy controls and getting killed by pigeons in my webswinging space. That all changed with Mysterio's Menace. The game looked beautiful and controlled beautifully. It was the first handheld where you actually felt like Spider-Man.

6. Spider-Man: The Videogame (Arcade)
My brother and I played this extremely fun side scroller to death in a hotel arcade during a family trip. You got could play as Spidey, the Black Cat and... er... Namor and Hawkeye for some reason. I'm still hoping this game will show up on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network.

5. Spider-Man: The Movie (PS2, Xbox, GameCube, PC)

This was the first 3D Spider-Man game to feature aerial combat and the developers did a great job. Fighting the Vulture and Green Goblin in the air was a blast. It also had the best Easter egg of any Spider-Man game; being able to play through the game as the Green Goblin.

4. Spider-Man: Web of Shadows (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)

Web of Shadows received far more scorn from gaming critics than it deserved. Granted, the game was buggy and the combat repetitive, but the good far outweighed the bad. Shaba Games made great improvements to the combat system by allowing players to fight enemies any way they wanted; on the ground, wall, in the air or a combination of the three. Switching between the red and black costumes on the fly, making decisions that affected the storyline, and being able to swing through a symbiote infested Manhattan made Web of Shadows a fine addition to Spider-Man's gaming library.

3. Spider-Man (PlayStation, N64, PC, Dreamcast)

This was the game that jump started Spider-Man's videogame success in the 2000's. By giving players tight control over all of Spider-Man's abilities, a fun storyline and a great camera (most of the time), "Spider-Man" paved the way for many of the great 3D Spider-Man games to come.

2. Ultimate Spider-Man (PS2, Xbox, GameCube, PC)

A beautiful sandbox world based off Mark Bagley's stunning artwork and a story penned by Brian Michael Bendis makes Ultimate Spider-Man the most authentic comic book experience a Spidey fan could have in a videogame. The creative talent behind the new cartoon should take this game to heart when bringing Ultimate Spider-Man to life on the small screen.

1. Spider-Man 2 (PS2, Xbox, GameCube)

While there have been many open world Spider-Man games since, none have been able to improve over Spider-Man 2. Swinging through the city stopping random crime was just as fun as playing through the main story. Unlike most movie games, Spider-Man 2 offered an interesting variation on the movie's plot by introducing Black Cat into the Spider-Man/Mary Jane relationship.
Hopefully, I'll be able to put Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions somewhere on the list once I find the time and money to play it!

Spider-Man shattered Dimensions game

Posted by bps 31 March 2010

I know I am not much of a person to be writing about games. But I suppose theres nothing that could possibly go wrong by posting a simple game trailer am I right?

A while back Spiderfan001 posted a teaser image for the new Spider-Man game coming out. Well, here are some videos of in game play.

We also have the official trailer here

This game will be featuring Spider-Men from a number of Universes! It really looks good. As can be seen, the game will include the 626 universe as well as the Noir universe, among others. Seeing these trailers want me to read Spider-Man Noir comics. Well done Marketing!

New Spider-Man Game in 2010

Posted by Adam Zenobi 18 March 2010

According to a recent issue of GamePro magazine (yes, apparently they still publish those) the next Spider-Man game will be released this year and will be titled Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. No word on which platforms the game will be released on, or, what kind of game it will be.
It will be interesting to see what direction Activision takes the new Spidey game. CEO Bobby Kotick recently stated in an interview that "our Spider-Man games have sucked for the last five years." While this has been true in some cases, like the Spider-Man 3 movie tie-in; Spider-Man: Friend or Foe was a decent kid's game, and Spider-Man: Web of Shadows was an underrated game with an impressive combat system.

Ultimate Alliance 2

Posted by bps 12 October 2009

Ultimate Alliance 2 - the sequel to the PS2 game Ultimate alliance. A simple game in which a group of marvel heroes join alliances and fight the enemy.

Ultimate Alliance 2 is a mixture of the recent events in the Marvel Universe. i.e Secret War and Civil war.

Image above: Player's can download Carnage for $2

The game begins with Nick Fury leading a group of heroes, (including Spider-man)to take down the prime minister, who has been supplying villians with dangerous technology.

Like most team up games, players are allowed to choose what players to will be in their super squad. Players can swap between 24 marvel heroes and villians.

At some point of the game, a civil war will break out amongst the heroes, as in the comics. Depending on which side is chosen, access to certain heroes will then be denied.

Spider-man: Web of Shadows Game trailer review

Posted by bps 06 October 2009

Game reviews. Below is a game trailer/review for Spider-man: Web of shadows available on PC, PS2, PS3, Xbox360 and Nintendo Wii.

Personally, I cannot stand reading a whole lot of words. As such, I decided to post this video I found detailing the game's features, story and pretty much anything there is to know.

The game begins with you searching for MJ, who is upset with Spidey for wearing the Black Symbiote costume.

Upon finding her, there is an argument between them that ends with a huge figure then enveloping Spider-man.

From here, the game takes a step back a few days before. The game is full of cool characters - some to lead and some to kill you along the way. It allows a choice for the player to choose which path to go down.

For do good-ers, they can play as the hero. For those who are into a little more, run around and do bad stuff fun, there is the option to go down the darker path. Check out the review/trailer below.

Welcome!
