Spider Island: The Avengers Review

Posted by Adam Zenobi 09 September 2011

Attention Spidey fans!  This issue contains the return of a character that we've all been waiting for since Spider Island began!  The team that brought us Fear Itself: Spider-Man has seen fit to bring us the return of...

The Fabulous Frog-Man!

The Story

Infestation, day one: Flag-Smasher, leader of a terrorist group dedicated to bringing down all the governments of the world called Ultimatum, is trying to convince his followers that their cause is still valid.  When he notices that some of his troops are getting spider powers, he sees it as the perfect opportunity to strike.

Infestation, day two: Hawkeye (who has gained spider powers), Ms. Marvel and Jessica Jones are watching the infestation unfold from Avengers Tower when they notice an explosion coming from the United Nations.  The three heroes head to the U.N. and start battling Flag-Smasher's spider powered troops.  During the fight Jessica makes a quick call to her nanny, Squirrel Girl, to make sure her baby is okay.  Squirrel Girl is having troubles of her own, as little Dani Cage has gained spider powers!

Eugene Patillo sees the chaos going on at the U.N. and decides he can no longer stand idly by and do nothing.  Thus, he quickly changes into his heroic alter ego; Frog-Man!

Meanwhile, the Avengers are having trouble dealing with their spider powered adversaries.  Ms. Marvel gets hit by a bazooka which knocks her across town.  As she recovers, she is greeted by Frog-Man, who proposes that they team up.

Inside the U.N. Assembly Hall, Flag-Smasher and his goons plant a bomb.

Ms. Marvel brings Frog-Man back to the U.N., where he is able to make quick work of the Ultimatum goons.  The heroes then head inside to battle Flag-Smasher (who reveals that he has also gained spider powers) and his goons.  During the course of the fight, Hawkeye uses his new spider powers to throw the bomb outside before it explodes.  Flag-Smasher attempts to attack Hawkeye, but is saved by Frog-Man who distracts Flag-Smasher by puking on him (all that jumping around made him nauseous).  Ms. Marvel then puts Flag-Smasher down for good.

With the U.N. saved, the Avengers thank Frog-Man for his help and then return to Avengers Mansion, where Dani Cage has managed to web Squirrel Girl to the ceiling.

Thoughts

With this one shot, Chris Yost has delivered a very fun and entertaining tie-in to Spider Island.  Hawkeye's reaction to the infestation is priceless, as is his reaction to gaining spider powers himself.  Reading Frog-Man's perspective on the situation and seeing him in action also brought a smile to my face.  I also have to give props to Yost's continuity knowledge; it was nice to see Spidey's brief flirtation with Ms. Marvel and Jessica's high school crush on him referenced.  In addition, Yost wisely brings up that Frog-Man used to be a member of the Initiative, which explains why he is such an effective fighter.  Mike McKone's artwork compliments the story well; his Frog-Man looks appropriately ridiculous.

If you have been enjoying Spider Island thus far, I would highly recommend this one shot.  Yost and co. have delivered a story that's bound to put a smile on your face, and you can't ask for more than that from your comics!

Siege: Spider-Man One Shot

Posted by bps 26 April 2010

This issue focuses on a small, highly anticipated fight between Spider-Man and Venom during the war at Asgard.  All fans have obviously been waiting for a long time for this fight. Personally, I found this issue disappointing, only because of the extremely high expectations I had for it.

The Story
It starts with Mac Gargan, the former Scorpion, as Venom, talking to himself. He knows fully well that this is the final war and after this he's in trouble. Nonetheless, he takes advantage of the situation and savors every moment of the battle - literally. This new Venom has grown to love eating people, and now 'gods.'

Spider-Man interferes half way to beat his enemy. The two fight and fall down from Asgard to the ground. In case you did not know, Asgard is in the sky. While on the ground, Ms Marvel comes to help Spidey out. In a few seconds, Spidey gives her an update about Venoms powers and weaknesses. Ms Marvel conveniently takes the liberty of pulling Mac Gargan out of the Venom suit.

The symbiote then covers Ms Marvel and uses her as a host. Enjoying the power she has, Venom proceeds to kill Spidey. Spider-Man obviously doesn't die since he has his own comic book title. He dodges Venom's blows, while Ms Marvel struggles to get free. At one point, Ms Marvel hints from within the symbiote that she needs more energy. Spidey then kicks Venom into an electrical power box. Ms Marvel bursts free while the symbiote returns to Mac Gargan.

Spider-Man continues his fight with Venom, complaining about how Venom had framed him, while pretending to be Spider-Man in the Sinister Spider-Man 1-4. In the midsts of fighting, Venom states that he felt Ms Marvel's emotions toward Spidey when she was his host. Spider-Man pauses in wonder long enough for Venom to throw a punch at him.

Just then, Ms Marvel comes back into the picture. The two work together to 'Baseball bat' Venom into the Dark Avenger's aircraft. Ms Marvel then flies Spidey back to Asgard and tells him that she wants him to stay in the Avengers. Apparently Spider-Man feels that he does not belong with the Extra Super powered heroes, fighting gods. The issue ends, suggesting that Ms Marvel does in fact have feelings for Spider-Man.

Thoughts
For starters, this issue was a little below expectations. I was expecting this issue to be the end of Mac Gargans reign as Venom. The fight ended badly with Venom simply being batted into the aircraft. As readers we all know that this did absolutely nothing to Venom in terms of injury.

Spidey refers to the events that took place in The Sinister Spider-Man, a miniseries I decided not to review after reading the first issue. I was not all that impressed.

Probably the highlight of this issue are the subtle sparks between Ms Marvel and Spider-Man. They've been on a date before in Ms Marvel 47. In my opinion, this relationship could never work.

New Avengers 59

Posted by bps 27 November 2009

The cover for New Avengers 59 is quite misleading. As can be seen below, the cover shows Spider-man and Spider-woman back to back, ready to face off the enemy.

Unfortunately, the comic has nothing out of the ordinary. There is no Spider-showdown, nor is there any highlight on Spider-man or Spider-woman.

Nevertheless, this is a good issue, for those who are following the New Avengers. The art is fantastic, while the story is nothing quite unexpected. Fortunately it is still entertaining.

For those who have not been following New Avengers, you can read my short summary on what has been happening with them in the past few issues ( New Avengers 55-58 summary)

In New Avengers 58, Luke cage was surrendered to Norman Osborn due to his ill condition. The only way to save him was to operate. Unfortunately, Luke cage has unbreakable skin. Only Norman had the power drainer that would drain Luke's powers so that the doctors could operate.

Back at the Avengers hideout, a plan is being devised to free him. With help from Luke's many friends, the Avengers plan to distract Norman's Dark Avengers, while his other friends, like the Thing, Daredevil, Dr Voodoo, Dr Strange and etc, free him. Dr Voodo and Dr Strange both use their magical powers to spy on Luke Cage to ensure that he has been treated.

Upon finding that he is recovering, they proceed with the plan. Fortunately nothing goes unexpectedly. Luke Cage is rescued and brought back to base safely. The only problem is that Norman already had a backup plan, should such an event take place.

The final panel shows Luke Cage's heart enlarged. Apparently, when operating on him, the surgeons inserted some type of tracker. (Assumption). It could very well be a bomb as well - unlikely though.

Ms Marvel 47

Posted by bps 26 November 2009

The Amazing Spider-date. That was the title for this issue. Peter Parker's P.O.V, which has been missing in recent Amazing Spider-man comics has somehow been transferred here to the Ms. Marvel issue. See Below:

The story
It starts with Spider-man teaming up with Ms Marvel ( Carol Danvers ) to stop a simple robber, who just robbed a bank alone, by himself. He almost manages to escape thanks to his high tech gear. Unfortunately for him, Ms Marvel can fly.

The meaningless intro ends with Ms Marvel telling Spidey to change into his civilian clothes as they're about to go on that date she owes him. Carol, fully prepared that Peter would not have any money to take her out, decides to take him out instead to a fancy dining restaurant.

The two talk briefly about their arch enemies, and Carol mentions Mystique. Ironic since we know that Mystique will be featured in the final Ms Marvel issue. Sad.

After that, there is struggle for any conversation until Peter's Spider-sense starts tingling. Two hired guns, who were spying on Carol came breaking in trying to capture Ms Marvel. They each take one on easily, Peter still having his expensive food in his hand.

After turning in the baddies, the two fly off - well Spidey gets carried, and look for something else to eat. They get a hot dog and sit on the roof, over looking the city talking. In a moment of truth, Carol mentions that she very much prefers junk food, but didn't want Peter to think she had bad taste in food. See Below:

Personal Thoughts

The story in this issue is nothing out of the ordinary. As expected, the issue simply highlights the relationship between Ms Marvel and Spidey. The art changes several times in the comic. Thankfully, the art here is pretty good in my opinion. Nothing like the vertigo art, or even the little manga type art in ASM 611. Notice the panels I selected to show in this review all have different artists. Overall a very simple issue, simple story, yet likable.

As far as what can be developed from the Spidey/Ms Marvel relationship - probably nothing in my opinion. Nonetheless, the two will share this moment together for a long time. My guess is that if anything should happen to Ms Marvel in the coming issues, Peter will probably remember her advice over dinner, and look into investing what money has to overcome his financial issues.

New Avengers 55 -58 summary

Posted by bps 25 November 2009

With the lack of good Amazing Spider-man stories of late, I have taken it upon myself to look for other good Spider-man involved stories with proper story line and art. With the release of New Avengers 59, sub-titled, Spider-showdown, later today. I thought it appropriate to let readers on this site get updated as to the latest developments in New Avengers.

Of late, Spider-man has been playing a more prominent role in the Avengers, as was planned by the Marvel team, as was already quoted here.

On Peter Parker's growth:

Bendis: "I also think that Spider-Man has become more and more comfortable with his role as an Avenger, and you'll see less and less of the nervous chatter and more of him as a voice of moral reason, being the man who exudes power and responsibility."

In New Avengers 55, we see that the Avengers are having some problems with the Hood, who is working for Osborn, and his gang. They have been on the run, using Capt America's (Bucky's) apartment to hide. In a desperate escape a battle, the Avengers left one of Tony Stark's broken power drainers behind. The crooks take it apart and study it, hoping to use it against the Avengers in their next meeting.

One important point to note in this issue is the disunity both in the Hood's gang and in the Avengers. Not everyone working under the Hood trusts him. Furthermore, he failed to appear at their meeting due to his powers being taken away. Even more people do not want to be working as puppets for Norman Osborn. A character called Dr Jonas Harrow rises to the occasion and explains his "plan."

Back at the Avengers, Captain America is extremely unimpressed with the condition the Avengers left his apartment in. Spider-man very much regrets revealing his secret identity to the team, and even more surprising is Ronin, who wants to kill Norman Osborn once and for all.

One of the highlights of this comic, in my opinion, was watching Spider-man stand up and argue his case and views during a lengthy discussion among his team members. Just like Bendis said he would.

The issue ends with the team entering a booby trap set by the Hood's thugs. Chemistro, who originally found the power drainer left by the Avengers in the beginning succeeded in copying it and using it on the Avengers, leaving them powerless.

New Avengers 56
reveals that it was never intended for these Avengers to appear. Instead the ruckus that attracted the good guys was intended to attract Norman's Avengers. Remember, many of the Hood's thugs did not like being puppets for Osborn. Dr Harrow then takes the opportunity to hack into the Iron Patriot suit and negotiate terms with Norman. When Norman disagrees, he and all his surrounding Avengers lose their powers, looking up to see the Hood's former gang, now under Dr Harrow. Else where the the Hood, is seen on a mystical quest, with Loki, to regain his powers.

Thank God for pictures that paint a thousand words. In this case, the panel below is enough to explain what exactly the Hood's former gang really wants.

New Avengers 57 continues as Norman Osborn agrees to make the deal stated above. As can be predicted, his first assignment for the gang of B class villains is to watch Venom eat Spider-man. Just in the nick of time, Mockingbird, whom I forgot to mention was not affected by the power drainer, appears with backup to evacuate the Avengers.

Before leaving, we see Spider-man taking an opportunity to kick Norman Osborn, who was about to tail their ship, in a very 'well done,' short, but complete fight scene.

The Hood is later shown to have regained his powers, with the help of some stones of Norn.

The Avengers, take Luke Cage, who still has not recovered, to the Night Nurse. Unfortunately, due to Luke Cage's unbreakable skin, she is unable to help him.

Norman and his avengers appear not long later threatening the real Avengers to surrender. At this point Ms. Marvel concludes that they need Norman's help since he is the one who now obtains the Power Drainer needed to break Luke's unbreakable skin.

Luke takes it upon himself to surrender while the others make a run for it.

In New Avengers 58, the Hood Returns, extremely dissatisfied that his crew is now serving Norman Osborn. He is of course even more furious with Dr Harrow.

Norman Osborn is forced to perform his duty as a world hero, to give medical attention to Luke Cage immediately.

With enough distraction, the Avengers manage to get back to base and bring the sad news to Jessica Jones.

All in all, the New Avengers story is going uphill in my opinion. I like the direction this comic is going. Better yet, we see loads of Spider-man in the picture. New Avenger's 59 is coming out later today along with a whole lot of other comics. I can assure you that I, personally will have more fun reviewing New Avengers 59 than ASM 613.
